Even if you’re one of the lucky people that truly enjoys your dream job, burnout can cause you to feel unusually tired, stressed, and short-tempered if you don’t take enough time away from work to care for yourself and rejuvenate your mind.

Burnout may feel different to everyone, but a few classic symptoms include feelings of exhaustion, loss of interest in your work, a consistent feeling that you’re overwhelmed by your responsibilities, or eating or drinking in excess. Burnout is more than just a mental feeling.  It has physical symptoms that you may not necessarily recognize as burnout, including stomach aches, migraines, and even shortness of breath.

Burnout won’t cure itself. When you start to feel burnout creeping in, it’s important to take the time and action you need to rejuvenate physically and mentally. Fortunately, FitClub has several cures for burnout that you can utilize any time you feel less than your best.

  • Increase your regular exercise. The impact of exercise on burnout, depression, anxiety and stress has been well-documented and has been proven to be successful in mitigating these unpleasant feelings.  Exercise releases endorphins that boost your mood. It minimizes your stress and helps improve self-esteem, helping you with worthwhile goals that you can achieve outside of your office.

  • Learn to meditate. Taking a vacation from your job or your life may seem like the obvious cure for burnout, and it is one possible solution.  Unfortunately, it’s also not practical for many people that need relief now and may not have the finances or time to escape for a week.  Meditation can act as a mini-mental vacation that you can return to again and again without putting all of your other priorities on hold.  FitClub teaches meditation and gives you a strong foundation you can carry over into your daily life.

  • Learn to prioritize. Making time for yourself, your family, and your health is hard when you have a demanding job and too many responsibilities.  It’s also crucial for living a healthier, happier life and staying more productive when you are at work.  If leaving work on time is challenging for you, an early morning workout or using your lunch break to fit in a quick workout can help you prioritize your health while staying on task at work.

  • Keep your diet on track. When we are feeling mentally unwell, it’s often easy to let other areas of life fall off track.  When you’re tired, it’s more difficult to make healthy decisions and too easy to hit a drive through or the vending machine for some cheap, empty calories. Your body needs a healthy, diverse diet to support better brain health.  Sugar, caffeine and alcohol may feel like easy fixes in the short-term when you’re feeling frazzled, but they will interfere with your sleep, lead to unwanted weight gain, and may even exacerbate your stress and anxiety. Instead, keeping healthy fruits and vegetables on hand can eliminate the work from eating well even when you’re feeling exhausted.
