If you’re new to exercise or interested in changing the routine you’ve been using for some time, you should consider having a conversation with your medical professional to determine whether you are healthy enough to embark on a new journey. Before you throw yourself into a high intensity, more challenging fitness routine, ask your medical professional the four questions below so you can achieve your goals in the safest possible manner.

  • How healthy is my heart? Your doctor should review your medical and genetic risks for heart disease, high blood pressure and assess whether you’re healthy enough for an exercise program. If you are at risk for a heart condition, your doctor may also be able to advise what type of exercise is not only safest, but has the best chance to prevent the risk of heart attack or stroke.

  • Is my weight loss goal reasonable and safe for me? Weight loss is an inherently personal goal.  Some people may need to eat healthier and exercise more often, but not necessarily with the intent of losing weight.  Instead of relying on glossy magazines or advertisements for one-size-fits all fad diets, a conversation with your doctor can focus on what’s best for you, considering your preexisting health conditions.  Your doctor can also help you devise the nutrition program that will help you safely and effectively reach your goals while you work towards a healthier weight that you can maintain.  You should be honest about the average number of calories you eat each day and what foods make up your diet.  Your doctor can warn you if you’re eating too few or too many calories to achieve your goal or what foods you might need to avoid in order to live your healthiest life.

  • What exercises should I avoid? At FitClub, you have access to an incredible variety of exercise classes, machines, and equipment.  There’s no one program that will work best for every person.  If you have a medical condition that limits the intensity at which you can exercise, your doctor and the professionals at FitClub can find the exercises that you can do to hit your healthy goals.  Your doctor, for example, might want you to start more slowly than you had intended and can help you determine the proper way to build a fitness regimen that’s best for you.

  • What exercises will eliminate or reduce my symptoms? If you have an underlying medical condition, your doctor can give you advice on what type of exercise can help you live a healthier, longer life. Sharing that information with your FitClub personal trainer is the key to maximizing your potential results. The two professionals can work together to ensure that you are safely pursuing goals specific to your individual needs.
